The Center for Strategic Studies
January 26, 1990
In an effort to conduct study on the peace and security situation of Mongolia in the context of the international military and strategic environment, the Center for Strategic Studies was first established within the Institute for Military History.

The first research publication
April 17, 1990
The Center for Strategic Studies launched its very first publication that serves as a quarterly research information digest in understanding political and security choices before Mongolia as well as the trends in the international security environment.  

Independent status
January 21, 1991
The Center for Strategic Studies became an independent center within the Ministry of Defense.

The Library
September 20, 1991
The library was officially established to serve as an academic research archive for broader security sectors community at the Center for Strategic Studies.

The Institute for Strategic Studies
May 1, 1992
The Center for Strategic Studies was re-organized as the Institute for Strategic Studies by the order of the Minister of Defense with an approved staff of ten.

 “Strategic studies” Journal
November 15, 1993
The military research journal “Soyombo” was renamed as “Strategic Studies” and a state registration certificate was authorized by the Ministry of Justice. Today, the quarterly journal is distributed not only to decision makers in Mongolia, it is also available to major universities and institutes.

The Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific

As part of our initiative, the Institute for Strategic Studies became a member committee to represent Mongolia to the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific (CSCAP), a prestigious international organization with the aim of building trust and developing security cooperation between countries in the region.

The first edition of the White Paper

The first edition of the Defense White Paper was published both in Mongolian and English.

The National Security Council
May 3, 2006
The Institute for Strategic Studies became affiliated to the National Security Council by the Government resolution.

The Executive Office of the National Security Council
January 1, 2009
The Institute for Strategic Studies became affiliated to the Executive Office of the National Security Council.

An independent special unit of the National Security Council
January 1, 2010
In order to strengthen research within the functions and scope of work of the National Security Council, the Institute for Strategic Studies became an independent special unit within the National Security Council.

The Council on Mongolian Security and Foreign Policy
April 15, 2010
At the initiative of the President of Mongolia, the Council on Mongolian Security and Foreign Policy was officially established at the Institute.

Expanded international network
January 28, 2011
A memorandum of understanding was signed with 10 research institutes and organizations in an effort to coordinate and strengthen research on national security issues in Mongolia.

The first “Ulaanbaatar Dialogue” international conference
June 17- 18, 2014
“The Ulaanbaatar Dialogue on Northeast Asian Security”  was held for the first time, becoming an annual international conference that fosters dialogue and contributes to confidence-building in the region.

Merged with the National Development Institute within the Office of the President of Mongolia
January 1, 2016
According to a government resolution, the National Development Institute under the Office of the President was merged with the Institute for Strategic Studies.
